Right time to start with your open source journey

We can feel the festivities all around us as October begins. In India, the festivities of Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali have already begun. Halloween, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are also approaching.

We also have a fantastic event for developers called Hacktoberfest, which will go on for a month until the end of October.

Hacktoberfest is an event presented by DigitalOcean, app write, and docker in collaboration with other organisations. The idea is to contribute to open-source projects.

Hacktoberfest is an annual event held in October to encourage individuals to contribute to open source.

Here are some frequently asked questions that will help you with your concerns.

Who can participate?

Anyone who is willing to contribute to open-source.
Contributions can be code updates, but not always. You may assist any open source project by assisting them in managing their documentation.

Why I should participate in Hacktoberfest?

While working on an open source project, you will not only learn a lot of new things, but you will also gain exposure to the fantastic open source community, which will eventually help you further your career.

And, if you haven’t already, Hacktoberfest is a great place to begin your open-source journey.

Also, If you complete the quest successfully, you’ll get amazing swags from the organisers. Who doesn’t need it? 😄

NOTE: I’m not encouraging you to do it only for the sake of freebies. 😝

How I can participate in Hacktoberfest?

  1. Check out the website and register yourself — click on Start Hacking.

2. You’ll see two options: Login using GitHub or Gitlab.

3. Here I’m selecting Github, you can select whatever you’re comfortable with. Now enter your credentials.

4. After logging in you would be able to see a message

Boot Registration: Hello, YOUR_NAME

Now, if you scroll down on this screen, you’ll find a form; fill it out as directed.

After successful registration, you can see the following screen with progress 0/4.

This implies that we must contribute to one of the open-source projects and make a pull request; if they are successfully integrated, our contribution will be counted.

NOTE: Only successfully added pull requests will be counted as contribution

How to search open source repositories to contribute?

Go to the following links, it will redirect you to the project which has #hacktoberfest tag associated with its repository.

GitHub: https://github.com/topics/hacktoberfest
Gitlab: https://gitlab.com/explore/projects?topic=hacktoberfest

Check the tickets, and if you’re interested in doing any of them, ask the maintainer to assign them to you. After that, you may begin working.

NOTE: Always ask first, then begin working; otherwise, there will be lower possibilities of it being merged.

Happy Hacktoberfest! ♥️
